How We Started...or WHY

OUR FAMILY….INCLUDING OUR DOGS

I’ve always been a consumer and user of these wonderful aromatic serenity inducing flickers. Aside from the obvious reason I love candles; being so fragrant and calming, is we’ve have always had dogs, and let’s face it, DOGS SMELL…and they also smell. Scientists guess the dog’s sense of smell is somewhere between 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than ours. One of the reasons a dog has such better smelling ability than us is the number of scent receptors. For every scent receptor a human has, a dog has about 50. And while I was burning all these great smelling candles in my home for all the reasons listed above, it was also to eliminate the smell of my dogs who like to go swimming, hiking, rolling around in the grass and all the fun things a dog likes to do, I couldn’t bathe them daily and we keep a very clean home, even with the pack we’ve always had. So we burned candles. For YEARS. Problem was we had one very allergic dog who had us so confused, as she could not talk to us, we could only guess based on her exposure what was irritating her. That’s Maui, the black and white dog in the photo. She’s the sweetest dog. We did everything we could to minimize her exposure to anything we thought was harming her; we never use any fertilizer on our grass, we fed her the best non-allergy inducing foods, she visited the vet regularly to get allergy shots and nothing….all the while we were still burning candles…

Finally after exhausting all other avenues I decided I should stop with the candles and see if that could have been the problem. Within less than a month, she was no longer exhibiting “headaches” and nausea, she seemed better. Could it have been that easy? What exactly is in a candle? I’ve never inquired…until then….and once I started reading I couldn’t stop. Some candles in today’s market are so toxic I can’t even begin to find the time or space on this site to explain. But basically I was not only harming my dogs, but my family too. I was MORTIFIED. I love candles and through that love I was unintentionally putting those I love in harm’s way. I was the consumer who had no idea. I wasn’t planning to make my own candles, I was just reading up about them.

But then something changed, I discovered there IS a way to make non toxic, wonderful smelling, cruelty free candles that are not only safe for my family but on the environment. This is not my idea, but it was one I was intrigued about. So I read some more, reached out to manufacturers of these safe ingredients, asked for MSDS sheets, read some more. I ordered a few of these ingredients and started creating just one candle. Then I made a few more and tested them…and tested some more…when I was completely satisfied that through my research and development phase, I tested them in my home. Nothing. No sick dog, no headaches, nothing. Just wonderful fragrances in my home and the smell of wet dog was no longer present. I had found a safe way to have these wonderful fragrances in my home without causing any harm to anyone around them.

Soon everyone who entered my home was asking where I got my great candles from and once they discovered I’d made them, they asked if I could make some for them. I then decided I should share these candles with everyone. I never expected my candles to end up in so many homes. We now pour over 200 candles a day and we sell all over Canada and the United States. We are an e-commerce store as well as in local markets where we enjoy talking to and meeting new customers who get the opportunity to smell our candles and continue coming back for more. We love what we do, our pets thank us and my grandson loves Gramma’s candles. This has turned into a passion of mine and it is now my full time job. We care about YOU and YOUR LOVED ONES and our product is a true testament of that. We will NEVER put any harmful ingredients in our candles. We hand pour each and every one of them in small batches to assure absolutely the best candles go into your home.

Thank you for supporting our small business and helping us grow. We are so very blessed.

“We are Candle Brewers. We hand choose all our ingredients and hand pour every candle right here in our Candle House.”

Tracie has over 30+ years in the Oil and Gas Industry as a Project Coordinator as well as a love for Interior Design and Real Estate. I’m also a renovation junkie and can’t stop tearing down walls and building new ones. I’m a dog lover and have always had a big four-legged furry buddy at my side. But mostly I’m a Family Person. Everything I do is for my family that I am so grateful to have, which includes my amazing husband, who is also our Logistics Manager, our two grown absolutely amazing, creative, hard-working, supportive sons, our amazingly kind, funny and intelligent grandson, our goofy, bossy, entitled dogs and the lovely daughter in-law my son has brought into our family to give me the daughter I could have only prayed for. We are so truly blessed.

Walt has an Engineering and Construction Management background where he’s spent over 40+ years all over the world managing large construction projects with thousands of workers and contractors. He’s a family oriented person who supports his wife in pretty much everything she does, but particularly our candle business. He loves our furry friends and loves his family even more. He retired from his 35 year career with Fluor Daniel/Fluor Canada in July of 2021 and I hired him five minutes later as our Logisitics Manager. We are so lucky to have him on our team as he brings his vast knowledge and kind, respectful interaction that we stand for here at BrewMill Candle Company Ltd. He’s an excellent addition to the company.
